I joined the project in 2009, and we produced installments on the Los Angeles River, Highland Park, Chinatown, Venice, Little Tokyo, and Compton.
The series expanded to include Youth Voices, a media literacy program; Land of Sunshine, a series of columns by local journalists; and StoryShare, a roaming storytelling pop-up for collecting community stories on video.
I carried various roles on the project, from research to production, post-production, and distribution. In addition, I co-developed the youth curriculum, supervised editorial, developed community engagement practices, and eventually led the project until it concluded in 2016.
During my six years on the project, we produced dozens of rich, interactive chapters for the series, including hundreds of audio and video interviews, original photography, and design. Hundreds of articles were published under Land of Sunshine. We served Youth Voices in nearly 20 local high schools and conducted StoryShare pop-up events across Los Angeles.
The series was platform dependent, using the now-defunct Adobe Flash and former content management systems on the KCET website. However, the stories and articles captured and produced are still discoverable through Google searches and have been cited by scholars and throughout Wikipedia.
