In 2011, my team and I expanded KCET Departures, an interactive documentary series, to include columns from local journalists that explored Southern California’s cultural and social history, including laws that shaped Los Angeles, immigration stories, bike culture, local lit, and history. My role over nearly ten years grew, becoming the Senior Director of Digital Content and overseeing digital content under food, history, arts and culture, news and environmental journalism, and early education.
My work included strategizing supporting content for original programs; developing special projects and partnerships with local universities, media organizations, news feeds, and non-profits; and expanding digital video and social media content.
As a part of my duties, I managed editorial practices and standards; hired editors, journalists, and photographers; and developed content partnerships. Under my supervision, we published articles, photo assignments, video content, and special projects with monthly site traffic passing 1 million page views.
KCET has been a model for local content and community storytelling for over 12 years. Highlights (to name a few) include deep reporting on the Los Angeles River, delivering early education resources to families during the COVID-19 pandemic while also spotlighting artists and performers during the lockdown, covering the legacy of Los Angeles muralism and the lifting of the mural moratorium in 2013, and local election resources for the last four election cycles.
My team of editors, producers, and our network of journalists won numerous awards for their work. And the stories we’ve produced over the years have been widely cited by media outlets, scholars, and publications.
